1. Marriage Certificate, Hungarian R.C. Parish of Connellsville, Pa.
2. Entry in Mary's Uj Orgona Virág [Lilac Blossom] Prayer and Songbook. Mary conspicuously displays the embossed cover of her Uj Orgona Virág in their wedding picture. Although their birthplaces were only 5 miles apart in Old Hungary, Emery and Mary did not meet until they came to America.
3. Recorded by Mary Toth ca. 1930 on a small slip of paper.
4. Fayette Co. Prothonotary Naturalization records, Petition No. 6973.
5. Baptismal Certificate, Kisrat R.C. Parish (Maly Ratovce, C.-S. in 1927, when cert. issued)
6. U.S. Immigration Officer Manifest (Ellis Island)
7. The manifest records that Emery (age 15) was going to join his cousin Frank Meszaros in Layton, Pa. On the same ship were: John Meszaros (44) and Elizabeth Meszaros (15), joining their brother and uncle Frank in Layton, Pa.; Louis Meszaros (24), joining his brother Alexander (Sandor) in Brownsville; and Frank Meszaros (45), joining his friend (John Recsko?) in Brownsville. All of the Meszaros travelers had left from Szurte (present-day Strumkovka, Ukraine), four miles ESE of Emery's Nagy Szelmenc. Frank Meszaros, whose family lived on Clover St. in Brownsville, and who was related to the Toths, was also from Szurte [ltr. from Helen (Meszaros) Gelston of Yorktown Hts, NY, Sept. 2000].
8. The manifest records that Mary was going to join her brother-in-law Mike (Bal..?) in Brownsville. The brother-in-law information is almost certainly bogus. Mary did in fact have directions to travel to Brownsville. She did not know the person who came to meet her there at the train station. Each of them waited until everyone else had left the station, then said, “You must be ...”
9. U.S. Census, 30 Apr 1910, ED 2. William Steele was Postmaster at Brownsville. The census shows the address as 221 Church St. The present-day numbering would put this near the corner of 3rd Ave. and Church St. The Brownsville Historical Society pamphlet entitled "A Walking Tour of Brownsville's North Side" has on its cover a property map (date unknown) showing Steele property extending along 4th Ave. from Spring St. to Church St. This lot (perhaps the Postmaster's property) is a separate location from the Samuel Steele Homestead highlighted in the pamphlet.
10. The 1920 census form inexplicably has the family's Toth surname misspelled beyond recognition.
11. The twins lived two days. From Mary's Uj Orgona Virág: “születtek 1913 Nov 26 meghaltak 28 án”
12. Margaret's Baptismal Certificate, Greek Catholic parish at Brownsville (St. Nicholas), 18 March 1912. (Frank Patrick) This is the earliest written documentation we have for the “originis locus” of the parents.
